Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Lehnhardt: Neonatal Hearing Screening – An Overview on the Situation worldwide: Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Lehnhardt: Carina – the fully implantable hearing system
Monika Lehnhardt was born in Vienna and graduated from the University Alma Mater Rudolfina in Vienna. She obtained her PhD is in philology, psychology and philosophy. She has held various positions in companies such as Schering (Berlin), Monsanto (Düsseldorf and Brussels), Pharmacia (Freiburg) and she established Cochlear Europe in Basel in 1987. Between the years 1987 and 1999, as Chief Executive Officer, Cochlear Europe grew from two to seventy employees and additional offices were opened in London and Hannover. In 1999 she decided to step aside and continued to work in a Management position for business development and customer relations. In 2001 she accepted the offer from Sydney headquarters to continue as a consultant to Cochlear Europe. In this position She lectures at scientific conferences and organises congresses for professionals and parents of children with cochlear implants. She is a published author on various topics related to cochlear implants (technical, audiological and rehabilitation aspects). Since 2002, she has been Managing Director of the Professor Ernst Lehnhardt-Foundation and served for a couple of years as a member of the Board of Auditory Verbal International, Inc. (AVI. Inc.). She actively participated in the QESWHIC Project (Qualification of Educational Staff Working with Hearing Impaired Children), a three years programme (2002 to 2005) developing training material online under the sponsorship of the European Community as one of the Comenius actions. This is accessible under www.lehn-acad.net In July 2007 she was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor by the International Academy of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, St. Petersburg. The ceremony took place at the Hofburg in Vienna. In 2007 she established her own company together with Simone Lei Hugentobler under the name of Monsana AG in Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Lehnhardt – Prof. Ernst Lehnhardt-Foundation, Badenweiler, Germany: Neonatal Hearing Screening Download of Abstract: Dr. Dr. hc. Monika Lehnhardt: Introduction: The Carina™ hearing system is a fully implantable, active middle ear implant, comprising a subcutaneous microphone, electronics capsule and an electromagnetic transducer. Objectives: Provide a viable treatment to moderate to severe hearing impaired patients confronted by the limitations of conventional amplification. These limitations are encountered in cases of recurrent ear canal allergies and chronic inflammation, or in cases of severe mixed hearing loss, where stability of passive prostheses is questionable and output of other amplifications may be limited. Patients also face limitations in dusty, or wet, working environments, where the use of conventional amplification can be restricted. Methods: In cases of sensorineural hearing loss, the Carina™ transducer is placed directly in contact with the incus body, bypassing ear canal limitations, including the occlusion effect. Specifically designed reconstructive ossicular prostheses can be attached to the Carina™ transducer and placed in contact with the head of the stapes, oval or round windows, in cases of conductive, or mixed hearing loss. Results: Published data show an average functional gain ranging from 20 to 36dB in cases of round window, head of stapes and incus body stimulation in mixed, conductive and sensorineural hearing losses respectively. The Carina™ fully implantable system provides proven clinical benefit in challenging environments where exposed electronics are vulnerable. Conclusion: The Carina™ is an effective CE marked treatment, for difficult cases across the hearing loss spectrum, where conventional therapies have failed.

Presentation in 5 Parts see below. Only available in Russian. Summary in English: Zusammenfassung in Deutsch: We cordially invite you to write into the comments field your questions, remarks, etc. and tell us in case you want the further informations about what is planned and offered. Hearing impairment is the most frequent disorder in newborns worldwide. 1 – 2 out of 1.000 newborns suffer from a permanent severe hearing loss. This applies also to Armenia – 40 – 80 children out of 44.000 newborns every year are severely hearing impaired or deaf. In the past practically all of them had no chance to get access to hearing and acquire speech and spoken language. Continue reading Appeal: Armenian diaspora helping deaf children at home |
